HARBOUR BASIN SAVED FROM POLLUTION

An inspection of a historic gasoline spill at Circle K’s oil and gas terminal in Kalmar, Sweden, revealed high levels of pollution in the soil and groundwater surrounding one of the terminal tanks. Containing elevated levels of harmful chemicals, the spill posed a growing risk of contamination of the neighbouring harbour basin.

Purpose and objective
In order to contain and eliminate the risk of the contamination reaching the harbour, Circle K was searching for a swift and efficient solution to clean up the pollution without closing the facilities or removing the technical installations.

Solution
As the majority of the pollution was situated in-accessibly under one of the large terminal tanks, Ejlskov suggested the installation of a BioRemediation barrier to stop the contamination from flowing into the harbour basin.

The barrier was designed to stop and remove the contamination without any future risk that the marine environment would be contaminated.

Using the most innovative technologies on the market, the pollution was immediately brought under control without interfering with the daily operation or removal of any technical installations.

The performance of the BioRemediation barrier was monitored regularly, and just 6 months after installation the regulatory requirements were met, and the risk from the pollution was removed.
