Along with Geoprobe® techniques, the MIP (Membrane Interface Probe) system is a highly effective method for environmental investigations. The MIP probe is driven into the subsurface on the end of a string of drill rods. During each MIP probing a countinuous contamination profile is generated through the subsurface logging the following data:
- Gas detector VOC signals
- Soil electrical conductivity (EC)
- Probe penetration rate
- Probe temperature
Ejlskov uses 3 detectors (PID, FID and XSD) in the MIP system which increases the quality of the investigation.
The advantage of using the MIP system is the immediate and high resolution data it produces, which allows a real-time interpretation of the geology and extent of VOC-contaminant migration. In contrast with environmental surveys using traditional drilling, the MIP sysem produces three logs for each detector at 15 mm intervals.
The MIP system is used as a screening tool to measure the relative concentration of VOCs in the subsurface: the data produced from the MIP system should be compared to the results of soil, gas, or water sampling from the same site to quantify the contamination concentration.
Ejlskov has the capability to perform multiple MIP investigations at a site and to produce a 3D visualization of any contamination plumes. These 3D visualizations aid and enhance the communication and presentation of the environmental survey, particularly to people with less environmental experience.
